Happy New Year! Let the healthy eating begin. What better way to eat healthy than by putting seafood in your diet at least once a week.

I was considering fresh fish for dinner and noticed the quality of the frozen Lummi Island Wild Pink Salmon Fillets. They flash freeze them to “lock in” the flavor and ship them directly to my Haggen store. It’s easily my favorite frozen fish and it’s local. Lummi Island Wild is unique in using a century old tradition of reefnet fishing that has been practiced by Native American tribes using cedar canoes and cedar nets to catch wild sockeye and other wild Pacific salmon. Though the boats have gotten a little bigger and solar powered winches are used to pull in the nylon net, this wild Pacific salmon fishing method has remained fundamentally unchanged. Fishermen still stand on towers near the Fraser River, waiting to see a school of salmon swim along the reef and over the small net, suspended between two boats. After a successful catch, reefnet salmon are gently rolled into a live well, having been out of the water for only seconds. This gives the fishermen a high success rate for releasing non-targeted species unharmed.

The sustainable methods used by Lummi Island Wild fishery reduces stress on the fish and prevents bruising that impacts the flavor and quality of salmon, resulting in the most mouthwatering and flavorful sockeye salmon around. I had the opportunity to visit the fishery in the summer, stand up on the towers and watch for fish myself. The pictures are below. It was a great experience!
