Kevin Swanda of Bellingham received a pleasant surprise when notified that his online entry had won a prize. He experienced a much bigger jolt after learning minutes later that he had won $35,000.
Swanda received one of the largest prizes available in the Monopoly Collect & Win game presented by 27 Haggen Food & Pharmacy and TOP Food & Drug stores in Washington. The game started March 16 and Swanda won his prize after shopping at the Barkley Village Haggen in Bellingham.
Haggen shoppers receive game tickets, each with a unique nine-digit code that can be submitted at the game’s website. Swanda said the website said he’d won a prize after entering one of his codes and he would receive details in an e-mail. Within minutes, Swanda was telling his wife Erin of an e-mail that told him of his $35,000 prize.
“She was pretty excited,” admitted Swanda, who works in Lynden as a quality-control technician for a laboratory. The couple has two sons, ages 4 years old and 15 months.
“We’ll use this to help pay some bills and put some in savings,” he said.
A Marysville woman recently won one of the top prizes -- $250,000 – in the Monopoly game. Other prizes remaining include $250,000, $35,000, two $25,000 cash prizes and two 2011 Ford F-150 trucks worth $25,000 apiece. Over $5 million in prizes and money-saving offers are included in the game, which continues through June 14.
“It is exciting to give away so much and change someone’s life!” said Clarence J. Gabriel, president and CEO of Haggen, Inc. “This has been a fun way to show our customers how much we appreciate them.”
