Portion of Apple Sales to Support Grants for Non-profit

January 11, 2012 • Yakima WA

Yakima, Wash., January 9, 2012 – This week FirstFruits Marketing of Washington launched its Opal® Brand apple campaign aimed at increasing awareness of this exceptionally flavorful new apple, while helping raise funds for Katies Krops, a non–profit with a mission to empower kids to help feed the hungry in local areas where the apple is sold.
Katie’s Krops offers grants to kids ages 9 to 16 to start vegetable gardens with the bounty then donated to individuals in need. Katie’s Krops gardens provide a sustainable solution to hunger while teaching kids an understanding of agriculture and the environment, nutrition, responsibility, and compassion.
“We are really excited to be joining forces with the Opal® Brand and FirstFruits to support kids starting vegetable gardens,” enthused Katie Stagliano, 13-year-old founder and chief executive gardener of Katie’s Krops. “I started Katie’s Krops with just a dream. With partners like FirstFruits Marketing that share those common values that dream will flourish and grow with every new garden we start. And Opal® apples are simply delicious!”
FirstFruits Marketing is a company known for its philanthropy and this year they have decided to donate a portion of proceeds to a cause that is dear to them – empowering kids to help others and making sustainable choices to help the hungry.
“Our partnership with Katie’s Krops is very special because of their mission to help the underserved,” remarked Andy Tudor, director of marketing at FirstFruits Marketing of Washington. “We admire the determination that Katie has brought to this project and want to support her efforts in sharing her dream with other kids.”
Opal® is the brand name used with the unique UEB 32642 variety, which is a cross between Topaz and Golden Delicious. The apple is sweet with a slight hint of tang at the finish, a crunchy texture, and a beautiful golden skin. Consumers have responded enthusiastically to this apple which is grown exclusively by Broetje Orchards in Washington and has limited availability.
Since 2011, Haggen and TOP Foods have been the primary retailer for Opal® apples in the Washington area. Last year, the 28 Haggen and TOP Foods stores in Washington and Oregon sold more than 241,000 lbs of the apples and have a goal to sell 313,000 lbs in 2012.
