While meatballs may be synonymous with Italian cuisine, the origin of the meatball spans the globe. Many cultures including Asia, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and even South America have their own unique take on everyone’s favorite sphere of meat.
Make It Your Own
Meatballs are a go-to comfort food so making them should be simple, too. Have fun and mix it up with spices and flavors.
1. Pick Your Meat
Any grind of meat will work but a blend of ground beef and pork is a popular combo. The fattier the meat, the more tender the meatballs, so keep that in mind when working with leaner meats. Meatballs made with turkey, chicken or lean ground beef lack fat and can easily overcook so keep an eye on them while in the oven.

2. Prepare & Cook
A binder is recommended to help tenderize the meatball. Soak breadcrumbs in a little milk and mix into the meat. Add an egg (or two for leaner meats) to help avoid dryness.
Choose between roasting and simmering in a sauce. Roasting will add a crispy outside texture. Simmering in a sauce adds the flavor of the sauce to the meatballs, while making the sauce richer.
3. Choose a Sauce
Think more than marinara and try an accompanying sauce that’s from another part of the world.
Thai Green Curry
- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 can unsweetened coconut milk (13.5 oz)
- 2 Tbsp green curry paste
- 1/3 cup lime juice, freshly squeezed
- 1 Tbsp parsley, chopped
Once meatballs are cooked, remove from pan and set aside. Add onion and garlic to frying pan and cook until onions are translucent. Add coconut milk, curry paste and lime juice. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Add meatballs and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes. Garnish with parsley.
Swedish Creamy Gravy
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 2 Tbsp flour
- 1 cup meat stock
- 1 cup fresh cream
Once meatballs are done, remove from pan and set aside. Melt butter in remaining fat, add the flour and brown a little. Add the meat stock and cream and cook, covered, for about ten minutes. Serve meatballs with sauce and mashed potatoes.
Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce
- 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
- 2 Tbsp fish sauce
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp fresh lime juice
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp red chili paste, such as sambal oelek
In a blender, puree the rice wine vinegar, fish sauce, hot water, sugar, lime juice, garlic, and chili paste until combined. Pour into a small bowl and serve with meatballs.
