Keep Grilling into Late Summer with Bread Cheese

This blog comes to you from our Fairhaven Cheese Specialist, Rebecca. And while it may be after Labor Day, Northwest grillers can all unite over this unique cheese that defies the laws of grilling and doesn’t melt under the heat. Find out how to wow your guests with this tasty meat alternative for the grill.

Excite vegetarians and omnivores alike at your next backyard soirée by throwing this grill-worthy cheese on the barbeque. Carr Valley has an amazing grilling cheese called Bread Cheese, made right here in the U.S. Similar to the Greek grilling cheese Haloumi or Finland’s Juustoleipä, this cheese keeps its shape under heat. If you want a quick snack you can always just dice it, toss in the microwave and enjoy.

Bread Cheese is a cow’s milk cheese and don’t be fooled, there’s no bread involved. Traditionally, it was eaten in place of bread with honey or jam for breakfast or dipped in coffee. I personally, enjoy it most sliced into strips and toasted straight on the grill until golden brown. Here’s my one warning: Serving Bread Cheese results in everyone forgetting anything else they ate at the party! Here’s how to roast it up with some fresh veggies for a deliciously simple grilled platter:

1. Slice a variety of your favorite vegetables. Sturdy veggies like asparagus, peppers, carrots, onion and zucchini hold up best on the grill.

2. Brush veggies with extra virgin olive oil and arrange on the grill over high heat for about 10 minutes or until you can see grill marks. Flip veggies and repeat on other side.

3. Slice Bread Cheese into strips and place directly on the grill over high heat. Grill for 5-10 minutes or until grill marks are visible. Cheese should be heated and slightly melty in the middle. Flip over and repeat on other side.

4. Serve cheese with grilled vegetables, meat or all by itself. Dip it in marinara or drizzle with a balsamic vinegar reduction.
