Cheese Pairings for Summer’s End

Artisan Cheese

This week’s cheese blog is from Ferndale’s Cheese Specialist, Darcie. She takes us through a few of her favorite end-of-summer pairings that bid farewell to our sun-filled Northwest season.

It’s already mid-August—where did the time go? There’s still so many things to take advantage while they fruit is ripe and the weather sunny—Sweet stone fruit, eating outside, hosting the last barbecue of the summer and of course getting together with family and friends! Here’s an end of season salute to the very best of summer. Enjoy these simple, fresh cheese pairings!

Saint André Triple Creme Cheese, Pence Peaches & Honey

Ditch the crackers and spread this rich, buttery cheese on juicy Pence peaches. Top it all off with a drizzle of local, raw honey and you never knew how absolutely satisfying summer could taste until we combine this triangle of tastes. The color, the taste, the presentation—Now, all you need is a chair on the beach while you watch a Northwest sunset.

Willamette Valley Farmstead Fontina & Chateau Ste Michelle Horse Heaven Hills 2012 Sauvignon Blanc

This farmstead cheese comes to us from Salem, Oregon where the jersey cows enjoy a breakfast of homegrown fresh forage. The creamy feel and flavor of this cheese on your tongue will instantly relax you. For further enjoyment pair it with the 2012 vintage of Chateau Ste Michelle Sauvignon Blanc. The crisp, racy style of this popular white wine has a pure, fresh, vibrant character with notes of citrus and the 2012 vintage produced exceptional grapes that year.

Beecher’s Flagship Cheese & Famous Dave’s Signature Spicy Pickles

The smell of the grill, the laughter of the children and the taste of summer—that’s the best way to describe this paring. Put together a tray of  Beecher’s Flagship Cheese and Famous Dave’s Spicy Pickles on your next antipasti tray. This robust nutty cheese can hold up to the flavors of the unique blend of the sweet and hot pickle. Even better, I recommend you top your last hamburger of the summer with these two great tastes. It will hold you over with summer satisfaction until next year.
