It’s October and that means time to bring awareness to the Non-GMO movement and our right to know what’s in our food. GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms, are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (or genetic engineering). This technology merges DNA from different species, creating combinations that cannot occur in nature or traditional crossbreeding.
Most GMOs have been engineered to withstand direct applications of pesticides or herbicides, or to produce an insecticide. Alfalfa, corn, potatoes, flax, rice, papaya, soy and sugar beets are some of the foods that most often contain GMOs.
Although the FDA maintains that GMOs are indeed safe for human consumption, there are many people who disagree, and many people who choose to avoid them until they’re sure they’re safe.
