Happy Non-GMO Month

It’s October and that means time to bring awareness to the Non-GMO movement and our right to know what’s in our food.  GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms, are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (or genetic engineering). This technology merges DNA from different species, creating combinations that cannot occur in nature or traditional crossbreeding.

Most GMOs have been engineered to withstand direct applications of pesticides or herbicides, or to produce an insecticide. Alfalfa, corn, potatoes, flax, rice, papaya, soy and sugar beets are some of the foods that most often contain GMOs.

Although the FDA maintains that GMOs are indeed safe for human consumption, there are many people who disagree, and many people who choose to avoid them until they’re sure they’re safe.

At Haggen, we’re giving our guests the opportunity to make educated purchases based on the values that are important to them. We’ve provided tags at shelf edge to help you identify items that have been Non-GMO Project Verified.

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices. For more information, visit www.nongmoproject.org
