I purchased my first Helleborus-‘HGC Jacob’ plant at our store and its gorgeous! This species is covered with white blooms that look like dancing fairies. I like to call the blooms fairies because the petals are flirting in the air just like little fairies do.
The plant produces 15 to 20 blooms that open as early as January, and continue to bloom through April. I also like the dark green leathery leaves; they make a great contrast against the blooms.
The Helleborus is also known as the “Christmas Rose”, “Snow Rose” or “Winter Rose.” It blooms during winter in the mountains of Central Europe. It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and blooms during the darkest months of the year when everything else is frozen solid. This little fairy is going to be a great asset in my garden.
It has been snowing for a few days so I will wait a few days for the ground to thaw before I plant it outdoors. So for now I will enjoy the blooms indoors.
If you enjoy your Helleborus indoors, remember they like cool temperatures. Place the plant on a cool window sill or beside a glass door, this will keep the plant cooler until it can be planted outdoors.
