It all began in 1933, when our company was founded by Ben & Dorothy Haggen and Doug
Clark in Bellingham, Washington with $1,100. Since then, we have dedicated ourselves
to providing our customers with the very best quality, personal service, and the
latest innovations from around the world.
In 1941, we became the first grocery store in the region to offer the first self-service
meat department. In 1951, we offered our customers an in-store scratch bakery.
And the list of new products and services to better meet the needs of our customers
continues: health and beauty products (1951), FTD Floral Department (first in a
U.S. grocery store, 1979) first grocery store in region to be open 24 hours (1982),
first to have fresh seafood on ice (1986), first grocery store in U.S. with an in-store
Starbucks coffee store (1989).
Today we are the Northwest's largest independent grocer and one of the nation's
75 largest grocery chains according to SuperMarket News.
